About this Project
At Hill & Harbor Design Build, we specialize in reimagining historic homes, seamlessly blending their original charm with modern functionality. At 62 Somerset Street in East Greenwich, Rhode Island, we took a timeless 1870 residence and carefully expanded it to enhance its livability while preserving its architectural integrity.
A key component of this transformation was a well-integrated addition on the left-hand side of the original home. This expansion allowed us to create a two-car attached garage with a primary suite above, adding both function and luxury. The addition also introduced a fourth bedroom, providing much-needed space for a growing family, and a mudroom connector that seamlessly ties the new and old structures together. Designed with precision, the addition blends so flawlessly with the existing architecture that it feels as if it has always been part of the home.
Modern Living Rooted in History
Beyond the addition, we thoughtfully reconfigured the interior layout to improve functionality while maintaining the home’s historic charm. The kitchen was relocated and redesigned with chef-grade appliances, custom wood cabinetry, and quartz countertops, making it a true centerpiece of the home. A butler’s pantry enhances storage and workflow, perfect for both everyday living and entertaining.
The newly designed primary suite is a private retreat, complete with a sitting area, walk-in closet, and spa-like bath, bringing a modern sense of comfort while maintaining the character of the original home.
Indoor-Outdoor Harmony
We revitalized the home’s expansive porches and outdoor spaces, adding a pergola-covered terrace that flows effortlessly into a lush garden and lawn, extending the living experience beyond the walls of the home. A 430-square-foot outbuilding was transformed into a versatile studio or home office, further enhancing the property’s flexibility.
